Winter has arrived and the fish get a
break
for now! Wow what a season weve had!
If you were here, you would see a
vast white landscape, as winter slowly sets in on the area. Despite the fact
that we had a record low rainfall this past season, the fishing was still
unbelievable. A little bit more effort getting through some channels and a few
new rocks learned, nothing has stopped us from producing amazing numbers of
trophy fish. Lack of rain however, did mean less time in your raingear and more
dry shore lunches. May, June and July were very warm, and August, September and
October saw cooler temperatures. The use of a guide was needed a little more
so, for safe travel this year. We still did our normal routine, day and
evening, recording more master angler muskies than anyone,
anywhere. There are still a few hardcore fishermen up here trolling,
and having good luck. A special thank you goes out to all of our guests who
keep coming, catching and making Moosehorn memories.
Our lodge had a ton of trophies in all
species, collected again this year. There were a total of One hundred
and sixty four master angler fish caught at Moosehorn Lodge in the
2006 season. Of that total, the breakdown is as follows; 24 Walleyes

back into the water your name can be entered into the draw. Two names are
drawn; the first is for a perma mount of the
winning ticket or $300 CDN towards your next trip to MHL. The
second drawn ticket wins their trip free (equal to
what the guest had spent the previous year). Don’t forget to
fill out those ballots, located in the front office, for each fish. Remember,
these sizes are different than master angler sizes.

Loss of a dear friend and guest
All of the staff at Moosehorn will be
missing our dear friend John Petersen, who has recently passed
on, leaving us with fond memories of all of the good times we had with him.
John’s place at Moosehorn Lodge will never be replaced in our hearts, and
we are sure that he is spending all of his days fishing now. We have posted a
commemorative page for John up at the lodge. Our newest 21’ bowrider has
been named after John, with us labeling the boat, “THE
JUDGE”. Colin is usually found guiding this boat, as John was
his dear friend.
Did you notice?
We have heard great compliments
from you, as to all of the various improvements that we have made to Moosehorn
Lodge. There is gravel on the driveway to keep down the dust. The landscaping
around the cabins also helped clean up the camp yard. There has been new grass
planted in from of the main lodge. The old concrete was yanked out for easier
boat launching. Another 21’ has been added to our fleet (4 altogether).
Carter and Greg have completed renovating his houseboat to line up a future
cruise for your pleasure. The boat looks even better now. Be sure to check out
other improvements this year. Please leave us with any thoughts or suggestions
that you may have, to better our facility for you.
Some of the overwhelming feedback that we
have received from you:
“My compliments to you and
your staff at the Moosehorn, you have a great facility with
professionals at every levell. I had a great stay!” - Stan Strub
“On behalf of Ryan Bents and
myself (Reush party over Labor Day weekend), we would like to thank everyone at
Moosehorn lodge for the generous hospitality, great service fantastic food, and
most of all, for all of our guide services (Greg Marino). It was another
successful jammed packed weekend full of fun, fishing and relaxation.
We will continue to be big fans of Moosehorn Lodge and spread the word
of referral whenever we get the chance.” - Mark A. Ruesch
“I just wanted to say thanks
again for the great time that you had showed me. It was an awesome time, and I
still can’t believe that I landed the freakin’ muskie. I
couldn’t have done it without Greg Marino’s awesome netting
ability. Hopefully we will see you all again next summer. I wish you
the best of luck.” – Glen Hunt
“Greg Rice, I wanted to send
you a personal thank you for last week. My father and I had a wonderful time
and are already starting to plan next year’s trip. As usual,
everything was perfect. Once again, thanks for the great time!”
– Tracy Connell
“Colin,
thanks again for a wonderful trip this year. We all had a great time
and enjoyed all of the fishing with you a Bryon. I may even plan a
second trip in July for some killer musky action. I just have to see what dates
that you have open.” – Scott Boeselager
“Colin, thank for the
pictures that you had sent us of the fish that Bob and I had caught with you
this year. The pictures turned out excellent and our families had really
enjoyed them. We wanted to extend our appreciation in the excellent job that
you did in guiding us. It’s always fun to catch a lot of fish, and we
enjoy going with someone who truly enjoys being out on the water, as you
obviously do. Can you keep us in mind for the same time frame next year?
For the first time since we have been coming to Canada, we would like
to return to the same place. You, Carter, Greg and the rest of the
staff did an excellent job!” – Michael W. Salsieder
“A special thank you for the
way our fishing trip has been a special event for us every year. Your
hospitality is second to none. You guys spoil us rotten and we love
it.” – Jim, Dick and Kent Donovan
“We had a great time and
we will return!” – Russ Swerdlyk
“Thanks again for a
wonderful time with our family at Moosehorn. We returned this year with our son
and grandson, they were really impressed. From the equipment, the menu, the
prepared meals and those to die for shore lunches. Our walleye fishing
was beyond our wildest expectations. Just so the others know, we were
there in the middle of August and it was still extremely successful
fishing!” – Eileen Gaura
“We had a great time at the
lodge. The fishing was awesome and so was our guide, Johnny
Kidd. You have to go out with him when you are there, especially if
you have kids. He KNOWS how to entertain them. Our kids had a blast and
so did I . Carter and Linda are very accommodating.” –
Chuck Ross
“Thank you Carter! We came
there this past week (5-22-26-06), for my Dad’s 75 th birthday. To say
that we had a good time would be an understatement. The weather was in the
80’s, no bugs and the fishing was in one word FANTASTIC. Our guide, Colin
was great, your boats and motors were excellent, and the scenery was
breathtaking. Greg and Nicole treated us like kings and Greg’s
food was just wonderful. We enjoyed having coffee with all of you
before breakfast, and Carter you are just a hoot to talk to. Thank you for
making a family memory for us. We will be back!” – Steve Hanchette
and Family
“Bea and I appreciate the
fine service, good meals and exceptional fishing. You guys have done an
excellent job refurbishing Moosehorn, including the new boats and the
dock. We have been coming up there for years and will continue to come
up until our health won’t let us.” - Jerry Nyback

We’ve added another Harbourcraft
21’ bowrider!
That’s right, due to the
overwhelming popularity of our Habourcraft bowriders last year, we’ve
have added another one to our fleet. These boats are not only the sharpest
looking boat on the water up here, but have an incredibly smooth ride as well.
Why not ride in style, while having the best fishing day of your life? Guide
tested, these boats have proven to be able to endure any type of weather, and
keep you well protected from the elements as well.
Musky Hunting - 54 master muskies this
year!
Talk about putting people on
monster fish. Our guest Joe Zimbal landed the biggest musky this year, a
whopping 55”, congratulations Joe! We have also had guests catch a
54”, a 51.5”, and a 51” on Lac Seul. Our guest Andrew Whitney
caught the Big Vermillion Lake record at 52.5” There were a lot of fish
caught by guests at camp over 44”. Almost every trip out had their
chances. Our guides raked up some monsters as well. These fish can all be seen
by logging on to the photo gallery on our website.
A lot of these Musky were caught in the evening. These
guys would start out a little later in the day and stay out till dark or fish
the full day and night. A guide is definitely recommended if you are interested
in evening fishing on Lac Seul. Ask us about evening guided fishing
trips.
Muskie Mamma keeps on producing
trophies!
Our co-owner and musky fishing
personality has been back up to her old tricks (57”er), well not quite
that big, but she’s still been hauling in the monsters. This year alone
she has a whopping 9 master muskies (over 44’). These sizes include a
monster 53.5”, a 49”, two 46”ers, a 45.5”, a 45”,
two 44.5”ers, and a 44” musky. She has finally got into the big
Pike as well, with four masters in that category (over 40”). Linda has
landed two 43”ers, and two 40”ers. She also has a 37” Lake
Trout to her credit this year. We feel that she’s probably had the best
season by any woman in the fishing world. Way to go Linda! Let’s see how
many more she can yank out through the ice this year!

From the Ministry
There will be new Fishing
Regulations in place for our region for the year 2007. These are not yet posted
and we will keep all of you informed as of any new changes.
As of January 1 st 2005, Big
Vermillion Lake in our area has a “no
bait” regulation in place. This means no bait live or dead for
use for any species on this lake only. Please refer to the “lure
list” on our website for the best artificial lake trout, smallmouth bass
and musky baits to bring or buy here. The rest of the area’s regulations
can be seen in a section soon posted on our website.
Crossing the Border (and the ongoing
“potato question”)
Here it is, the reason that potatoes can
no longer cross the border (either direction), is because of a potato
“mop-top virus” (harmful to potatoes only) that is trying to be
kept under control in Canada and the U.S. The border patrol can never seem to
tell anyone why. Here are some other basics on crossing; Visitors may bring the
following into Canada: 200 cigarettes (= 1 carton), 50 cigars, and 14 ounces of
tobacco; 1.1 liters or 40 imperial ounces (= 1 bottle) of liquor or wine, or 24
x 355 - milliliter (12-ounce) bottles or cans of beer for personal consumption;
gifts up to the value of C$60 per gift. To import tobacco products a
person must be 18 years of age or over, and to import alcoholic beverages the
importer must have reached the legal age established by authorities of the
province. You can bring in a small amount of food for your own
consumption. The same restrictions will apply to returning Canadian residents.
Be sure to check with Canadian borders before crossing for any new
regulations.
